Improvisation in the music classroom is often an afterthought, if it is used at all. However, putting sounds together is at the heart of composition, and one of the best ways of learning how to do this is simply to jump in at the deep end and experiment. Improvisation can help to provide students with a framework in which to try out ideas freely, and the best ones can then be fed into composition assignments.
